Immune to the weather because of threadmill

I usually run outside, but there are times when the weather makes running outside nearly impossible.

Sometimes running outside is plain dangerous!

I don't mind a bit of rain or snow, but when the streets turn into ice rinks, it's not smart to go outside for a run! But what gets to me even more, are high temperatures. I can't think of anything worse than running in humid, tropical temperatures.

Running inside!

But that doesn't mean I want to skip any runs! I hate skipping runs, because it makes me feel all antsy. So I've been eyeing gym equipment for training at home for quite some time now.

Once I even bought a treadmill, but because I was too stingy to fork out for an electrical one, it turned out to a dud. I had to hold the sidebars to get the thing moving. It was nothing like running outside, because I had to keep my hands on the bars the whole time. Eventually I sold it to some guy who wanted it for his 'broad'. He was kind of scary looking, so I hope his 'broad' liked it… If I ever buy a running machine again, it'll be a motorised one.

Yummy! Look at this one!

I'm also kind of seduced by this Adidas home gym equipment thingy. It looks like a mediaval torture device, but I'm sure it will help me strengthen muscles I didn't know I had.

I'm always reading how runners should do more than just run, and should do exercises to strengthen their core muscles etcetera, and this machine would help me do just that.

The best thing about having home gym equipment, is being able to do your work out while watching television. You get a great work out while watching Grey's Anatomy or something.

Do you own any home gym equipment?

I do have a treadmill that I inherited from my inlaws, but I hate it. I don't mind walking on it, but running on it is just annoying. One of the things that keeps me going when I'm running is passing familiar landmarks and enjoying the fresh air. Running on the treadmill is so incredibly monotonous - I'd rather just brisk-walk than attempt a true run on it.

I don't like running in the dark, so we're thinking of getting a treadmill so we can continue to run during the winter since there are less daylight hours during that oh-so-dreary time. I love the idea of catching up on TV while getting a run in! Makes the dreadmill just a little less dreadful.

Yes, that what I think! You can use the time on the treadmill to your advantage.

I'm so lucky with where I live. There's rarely any time during the year that it's too uncomfortable to run. Our Winters are never too cold and I can survive the heat and humidity of Summer if I get up early to run. I do have one piece of gym equipment at home - an exercise bike. It gets used maybe once or twice a year because if I'm going to exercise I'd much rather be outside.

Hi there,

I have one of the lousy treadmills that you have to hold on to in order to make it work. I don't have enough space to have a motorized one -- this one folds up and can be placed in a corner. I only use it because I tend to exercise before the sun comes up so I can be showered and ready to go when it's time to help my son get ready for school or start an early work day. I don't like walking by myself in the dark.

That's the one I had! But it is convenient of course, that you can fold it up. I don't like running in the dark either. It's scary.

I see that this is an old post, and I'm just curious if you ever bought the treadmill. Running outdoors in the winter is challenging where I live--due to slick sidewalks and poor air quality. In the past I've run on an indoor track, but I let my gym membership go, because my office now has a great gym. The only problem is it doesn't have a track, just a treadmill. It's a nice machine, but I struggle to feel comfortable running on a treadmill. I don't feel in control, like I do when I'm running on a track or outdoors. I'd love to hear if you've had a similar experience.

I bought a so called mechanical treadmill, but regretted it. I had to use my hands to push myself and to get the treadmill moving that way. Looking back I should have spend a bit more money and bought an electrical treadmill. Having said that, I found it hard, running inside. So at the moment I just run outside. The weather has to be really bad, for me not to out there.
