Running in Winter: dress like an onion!

Both as a mom, and as a runner, I firmly believe in the Danish saying: 'There is no such thing as bad weather. There's only bad clothing!'

Children's wear in Winter

So I bought lots of thermal wear for the kids, and invested heavily in mittens and heavy woollen shawls. Especially now, that we're living in the country, their regular winter wear didn't do the trick anymore.

From our previous home, I walked the kids to school. And my eldest kids only had a 20 minute bike ride to get to school. Their clothing just wasn't warm enough for longer distances.

I'm pleased to report the adjustments to their clothes worked! They're not complaining about the cold. Only about their stupid mom, making them wear thermal wear.

I'm dressing like an onion

As a runner the cold gives me pause: I definitely don't want to dress too chilly, but too hot is just as bad. Since all the running literature emphasizes the importance of layering, I decided to dress like an onion!

So this is what I wore this morning:
  1. thermal tank top
  2. thermal tights
  3. running pants from H&M
  4. hardlooptrui van Kruidvat
  5. Adidas bodywarmer
  6. Running jacket with sleevves
  7. and of course a woolen hat, mittens, and a shawl.
It took me about half an hour to get dressed, but I was neither to hot, nor too cold! So it worked.

Does the weather influence your running plans?
How do you adjust your clothing to the weather?

This is a perfect analogy!! I tend to wear many light layers when I run. The weather usually just causes me to put on more or less layers but precipitation doesn't change things....unless it's a blizzard!

I dress like an onion too. The weather around here in NM during winter is unpredictable at best. The only thing you can rely on is the need for sunglasses at some point during the day.

I love the onion analogy! Right now I only have boys living at home and they walk around in their underware all day ...and put shorts to go outside( it is FEb and we live in central pa)...I am happy to see them dressed...!!
